I don’t consider myself an artist. I have an eye for good photography and I have good taste. But really, I’m good at visual organization.

That’s why print and web design go hand in hand. During my time at Chicago magazine, I learned the fundamentals of editorial and print design. As I moved on and began to learn web design at Merge, I used those fundamentals—grid systems, typography, negative space—and applied them to the page. Whether a “reader” or a “user”, a web page or a brochure, the goals are the same—communicate information in a clear and meaningful way.

My experience has lead me to two specialties: digital creative direction and design and brand/identity design.

As websites have become the main face for brands, these things have married into design systems. Type hierarchy, cards, modules, forms. The original print brand guidelines have got nothing on design systems. When a design system is thought out and implemented well it’s magic.

I am currently available for freelance opportunities. Please email me breemckenna@gmail.com to get in touch.
